Frequently Asked Questions

We reply to every inquiry within one business day

Starting therapy, or sending someone you care about to a therapist, comes with questions. Think of this page as the conversation we would have on the phone, written down so you can read it at your own pace.

Getting Started

For anyone thinking about therapy with us.

Are you accepting new clients?

Yes. CenTex Therapies is currently accepting new clients. You can schedule your first session online or call us at 254.218.4065.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes. We offer a free 15-minute phone consultation. It is a chance to ask questions, get a feel for how we work, and make sure we are the right fit before you commit to anything.

How do I schedule my first appointment?

Visit our new client page or call 254.218.4065. We reply to website inquiries within one business day, match you with a therapist, and typically offer availability within the week.

What are your hours?

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM. Evening and weekend sessions are available by appointment.

What do you specialize in?

Our leading specialty is ADHD in adults, led by a clinician who holds the ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP) credential.

We also bring deep experience working with service members, veterans, and their families.

Beyond that, we help with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, stress, career transitions, and emotional regulation through DBT Therapy, along with clinical Assessment & Diagnosis.

Do you work with teens?

Some of our clinicians work with teens. Our ADHD services are for adults. Give us a call at 254.218.4065 and we will let you know which clinician is the best fit, or point you toward other resources if we are not.

What if I have never done therapy before?

That is completely okay. Everyone starts somewhere. Your first session is a conversation about what brought you here and what you hope will change. You share only what you are ready to share. Our guide on what to expect in your first online therapy session walks through it step by step.

Online Therapy

How virtual sessions work.

How does online therapy work?

Every session happens over secure, HIPAA-compliant video. After you schedule, you receive a link. All you need is a private space and a reliable internet connection. There is no software to install and no waiting room to sit in.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For many people and many concerns, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD, research has found video therapy to be a strong alternative to meeting in person. The things that make therapy work, the relationship and the evidence-based methods, travel well through a screen. If online sessions are not the right fit for you, we will tell you honestly.

Do I have to live near Killeen?

No. We are rooted in Killeen near Fort Cavazos, but we are 100% virtual and serve clients across Texas, from Houston and Dallas to El Paso and the Rio Grande Valley. Because our therapists are licensed in Texas, you need to be physically located in Texas at the time of each session.

Do you have an office I can visit?

No. CenTex Therapies is 100% virtual, so there is no walk-in office. Every session takes place by secure video.

How long are sessions, and how often will I come?

Standard sessions run 45 to 60 minutes. Most people start with weekly sessions, and you and your therapist adjust the frequency as you make progress.

Insurance and Cost

What you can expect to pay.

What insurance do you accept?

We are in-network with TriCare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Cigna, Aetna, United HealthCare, Sana, and Baylor Scott & White. If your plan is not on that list, contact us and we will talk through your options.

Do you accept self-pay?

Yes. We accept private pay. We do not post a single rate because what you pay depends on the services you actually need, so we go over the cost with you before your first session. If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance, you also have the right under federal law to receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges.

Do you work with military families and accept TriCare?

Yes. CenTex Therapies is veteran-owned and rooted in the Fort Cavazos community. We understand military culture, deployments, PCS moves, and the transition back to civilian life, and we are in-network with TriCare.

Understanding Adult ADHD

Clearing up the myths that keep people from getting help.

Can adults really have ADHD, or is it just a childhood thing?

Adults absolutely have ADHD. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms begin in childhood and usually continue into the teen years and adulthood. Many adults were simply never assessed as kids. They learned to cope, often at a real cost, until life got busy enough that the coping strategies stopped working.

Isn't ADHD just an excuse, or something everyone has a little of?

No. Everyone loses their keys sometimes. ADHD is a real, diagnosable condition in which challenges with attention, organization, time, and impulse control show up consistently, across different parts of life, and get in the way of what you are trying to do.

Would you call glasses an excuse for not seeing clearly? Naming ADHD works the same way. It does not lower the bar. It gives you the right tools to reach it.

Why is ADHD so often missed in women?

ADHD can look different depending on the person. Girls and women more often show the inattentive side of ADHD, such as daydreaming, disorganization, and mental fatigue, rather than the outwardly hyperactive behavior that tends to draw attention in a classroom. A 2014 clinical review notes that women and girls with ADHD are also more likely to turn their struggles inward and become anxious or depressed, which can lead to the anxiety or depression being treated while the ADHD underneath goes unrecognized.

Many women do not learn they have ADHD until adulthood, sometimes after a child of theirs is diagnosed.

Can hormones affect ADHD symptoms?

They can. Researchers have described a relationship between estrogen and dopamine, a brain chemical closely tied to attention. Many women notice their ADHD symptoms shift across the menstrual cycle, after childbirth, or during perimenopause. We explore this further in our article on ADHD and perimenopause.

Does ADHD look different in men?

Often, yes. In boys and men, ADHD is more likely to be recognized early because the signs are more visible, such as restlessness or acting on impulse. As men get older, those signs can look like constant busyness, job hopping, risk-taking, or frustration that is quick to boil over. Whatever your gender, what matters most is how ADHD shows up in your life, and that is what an assessment looks at.

Can you diagnose ADHD?

Yes. Our ADHD Assessment is a clinical evaluation that can result in a diagnosis, done virtually anywhere in Texas. It is different from full psychological testing performed by a licensed psychologist, which some universities or employers require for accommodations. We will tell you up front if that is what you need.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

No. Our therapists are Licensed Professional Counselors and do not prescribe. If medication is worth exploring, we can refer you to a prescriber and, with your permission, coordinate care with them while we focus on the counseling side through ADHD Counseling.

Privacy and Safety

How we protect you.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes, with a few limited exceptions required by law, such as imminent danger to yourself or others, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or a court order. Your therapist will review confidentiality with you in detail during your first session.

What should I do if I am in crisis?

If you or someone you love is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) or call 911. CenTex Therapies provides scheduled telehealth counseling and is not an emergency service.

For Referring Providers

For clinicians, prescribers, and agencies who send us clients.

How do I refer a client to CenTex Therapies?

Use the short form on our Refer a Patient page. It asks about you, not your patient, so no protected health information goes through the website. We call you back within one business day to take the clinical details by phone and confirm current openings.

Will you coordinate care with me?

Yes. With the client’s written authorization, we keep referring providers and prescribers updated on how care is going. You stay the prescriber, and we handle the counseling.
