Module 1 — Foundations of Clinical Supervision
Clinical supervision keeps counselors from making messes. It’s a structured way for a pro to guide someone newer, making sure they stay ethical and actually get better at their jobs. Two frameworks usually run the show: developmental and integrated models. Stoltenberg’s developmental models treat counselors like the clients they see. People grow in stages. A rookie counselor is usually a ball of nerves and needs specific instructions. They want a teacher. As they gain experience, they need a supervisor who acts more like a consultant. The goal is to match the supervisor’s style to the counselor’s growth in areas like self-awareness and skills. Integrated models take a different path. The Discrimination Model is the most famous version here. It lets a supervisor flip between being a teacher, a consultant or a counselor. They might focus on how the counselor handles an intervention, how they think about the case or how their personality affects the session. It’s flexible and skips the one-size-fits-all trap. The whole thing relies on the relationship. You need trust and empathy for this to work. The learning stops if the power dynamic is off. The supervisor manages roles like coach or consultant to build a supportive alliance where reflection and growth actually happen.
