Grieving During the Holidays: Virtual Grief Support in Texas

The holidays can make loss louder. Here is how virtual grief counseling across Texas can help you carry it with more gentleness.

The first sign usually isn’t sadness. It’s a grocery store aisle. A song in the car. A dish nobody makes quite right anymore. Then October turns into November, the decorations go up, and the empty chair at the table gets very, very loud.

If you’re reading this because someone is missing from your holidays this year, I want you to hear something first: nothing is wrong with you. Grief doesn’t take a vacation just because everyone else is celebrating.

Why the Holidays Make Grief Heavier

Think of grief like a bruise. Most days you can move around it. But holidays press on the exact spot. Traditions, smells, family rituals, and even the calendar itself are tied to the person or the life you lost. That is why a loss from years ago can suddenly feel brand new in December.

Grief isn’t only about death, either. Divorce, estrangement, a military move that pulled your family apart, a deployment, a miscarriage, or the loss of the life you expected all count. Many of the Texans we work with, especially military families near Fort Hood, are grieving something that never got a funeral and never got a casserole.

What Helps (and What Doesn’t)

Well-meaning people will tell you to stay busy, to be grateful, or to “just focus on the good times.” Staying busy works about as well as holding a beach ball underwater. It pops back up, usually at the worst time.

What tends to help is giving grief somewhere to go. That might look like:

Choosing which traditions you will keep, which you will change, and which you will let rest this year. You are allowed to do the holidays differently.

Saying the person’s name out loud. Lighting a candle, setting a small place, or sharing a story at the table can turn silence into connection.

Letting yourself feel two things at once. You can laugh at dinner and cry in the driveway. Both are honest.

Having one person who doesn’t need you to be okay. Sometimes that is a friend. Sometimes it is a counselor, because you shouldn’t have to manage everyone else’s feelings while carrying your own.

How Virtual Grief Counseling Works

Grief takes energy, and the last thing a tired heart needs is a 40-minute drive and a waiting room. At CenTex Therapies, every session happens by secure video from wherever you feel safest, whether that is your living room in Killeen, your office in Dallas, or a parked car in San Antonio because it is the only quiet place you’ve got.

In individual counseling, we don’t rush you toward “closure.” We make room for the story of what you lost, help you understand what your mind and body are doing, and build practical ways to get through the hard dates. When emotions feel too big, skills from DBT therapy can help you ride the wave instead of drowning in it. You can learn more about how online therapy across Texas works on our site.

Grief can also tangle with other things. Poor sleep, loss of focus, and trouble getting started are common, and if you already live with attention challenges, loss can make them louder. Our ADHD counseling services can help you sort out what is grief and what is something else.

Using Your Insurance

Support shouldn’t cost you more stress. CenTex Therapies is in-network with TriCare, BCBS of Texas, Cigna, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Sana, and Baylor Scott & White, so most clients can use the benefits they already have. We are currently accepting new clients, and we will help you verify coverage before your first session.

When to Reach Out Sooner

Reach out if you’re not sleeping or eating, if you’re pulling away from everyone, if daily tasks feel impossible weeks later, or if you simply don’t want to walk through this season alone. You don’t need a “good enough” reason. Missing someone is reason enough.

If you are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911 right away. You are not alone.

A Gentler Road Ahead

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means that one day the love you carry gets a little lighter than the pain, and the holidays become something you can hold again. I’ve walked beside many people toward that day, and I believe it is possible for you too.

Call 254.218.4065 or visit centextherapies.com/newclients to schedule your first virtual grief counseling session. Let’s carry this together.
