Picture a duck crossing a pond. Above the water it looks calm, almost effortless. Below the surface the feet never stop. That is what high-functioning anxiety looks like from the outside, and a lot of the adults who come to CenTex Therapies for anxiety therapy, virtual and across Texas, have been that duck for years. Nobody at work would guess. Their families might not either. But the paddling is exhausting, and it never stops.
CenTex Therapies is a 100% virtual practice based in Killeen, near Fort Hood, serving adults in every corner of the state. If you have been holding it together so well that nobody thinks to ask how you are doing, this article is for you.
When Anxiety Wears a Suit
Most people picture anxiety as panic attacks or someone too overwhelmed to leave the house. That version is real, and we treat it. But there is a quieter version that gets missed because it looks like competence. You answer emails at 11 PM. You rehearse conversations in the shower. You say yes to everything because saying no feels dangerous. Your to-do list is a form of self-defense.
From the outside, that reads as ambition. From the inside, it feels like you are one dropped ball away from everything falling apart. The engine that keeps you productive is fear, and fear is a terrible long-term fuel. It burns hot and leaves a residue.
How to Tell If This Is You
A few signs we hear over and over in our first sessions. You struggle to rest without guilt. A vacation takes three days to actually begin. You replay small mistakes for weeks. Compliments bounce off, but criticism sticks like a burr. Your body keeps score too, with tight shoulders, clenched jaw, stomach trouble, and sleep that never quite refreshes you.
Many of our clients near Fort Hood learned this pattern in uniform, where vigilance kept people alive. The trouble is the alarm system never got the memo that the mission ended. Others learned it as the oldest child, the family fixer, or the student who was praised for being “so responsible.” Different origin, same wiring.
What Virtual Anxiety Therapy Looks Like
We start by mapping the engine. Where does the pressure come from, what does it protect you from, and what is it costing you? Then we work on two tracks at once. The first is the body. Anxiety lives in the nervous system before it lives in your thoughts, so we teach skills that settle it, including grounding and distress tolerance tools from DBT. The second track is the beliefs underneath, the ones that say rest must be earned and worth is measured in output.
Sessions happen on secure video from wherever you are. That matters more than it sounds for this particular kind of anxiety, because the client who “doesn’t have time for therapy” usually can find 50 minutes in a parked car or a home office. Online therapy across Texas removes the commute, the waiting room, and the excuse.
One more thing we check for. A surprising number of adults with high-functioning anxiety also have undiagnosed ADHD. The anxiety grew as a workaround for a brain that loses track of time and tasks, and the two feed each other. If that rings a bell, our ADHD counseling and assessment and diagnosis services can sort out which problem you are actually solving.
What Changes
Clients do not leave therapy less capable. They leave capable for a different reason. The work still gets done, but it gets done because they chose it, not because the alternative felt like disaster. They sleep. They take the vacation and enjoy it on day one. They let a mistake be a mistake instead of a verdict.
Think of the duck again. Therapy does not make the pond go away. It teaches you to float.
Cost and Coverage
We accept TriCare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, Cigna, Aetna, United HealthCare, Sana, and Baylor Scott & White, and private pay is available too. We also offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so you can ask questions before committing to anything.
You have carried this well for a long time. You do not have to keep carrying it alone. Individual counseling with CenTex Therapies is a place to set some of it down.
