A Free Self-Assessment from CenTex Therapies

Discover Your
Supervision Style

Most of us carry our supervision style without ever putting a name to it. We absorb our approach from the supervisors who shaped us, from the clients who challenged us, and from the seasons of our own clinical growth. The trouble is, what stays unnamed is hard to grow.

This free assessment was built to help LPC supervisors and supervisors-in-training see themselves more clearly. Drawing on Bernard’s Discrimination Model, it identifies your dominant style across four supervisory roles, and it shows you where your real growth edge lies.

The Framework

Four Supervisory Roles

Bernard’s Discrimination Model identifies three core roles every supervisor moves between in practice. To these we add a fourth that the LPC-S position carries by statute and by ethical mandate.

Teacher
Direct instruction, modeling, and skill-building. The supervisor as expert who imparts knowledge.
Counselor
Attending to the supervisee’s inner experience and growth as a person. The supervisor as relational mirror.
Consultant
Collaborative, exploratory dialogue between two professionals. The supervisor as thinking partner.
Evaluator
Standards, accountability, and gatekeeping for the profession. The supervisor as steward of the license.

Reflection Questions

Before you decide what your results mean, work through these prompts in writing or with a trusted peer.

  1. Do my results match how I see myself, or did anything surprise me?
  2. Which role do I default to when I am tired, busy, or unsure?
  3. Is there a role I tend to avoid, and why? What might be underneath the avoidance?
  4. Think of a current supervisee. What role do they most need from me right now? Am I providing it?
  5. Where might my dominant style be a strength I am leaning on too hard, to the point that it limits a supervisee’s growth?
  6. If a supervisee gave me anonymous feedback today, what would I want them to say about my style? What might they actually say?
  7. What is one concrete change I want to make in my next three supervision sessions based on these results?
